The Firefox 8 Baffle/Throat plate is a cast iron plate that is designed to sit above the fire bricks to prevent damage from the excessive heat and to provide better combustion within the firebox.  By keeping the flames within the firebox longer means more excess gases are burnt off ensuring more heat and higher efficiency.
